Deciduous trees, up to 50 m tall. Branches grey to greyish brown, quadrangular, densely stellate-tomentose. Leaves usually opposite-decussate or whorled; petiole robust, 2-4 cm long; leaf blade broadly ovate-elliptic to ovate or obovate, 15-45(-80) cm x 8-23(-40) cm, papery, shining green above, paler tomentose beneath, base cuneate and decurrent, margin entire to repand-dentate, apex acuminate to obtuse, lateral veins 7-12 pairs. Inflorescence terminal or axillary large panicles, 25-40 cm x 30 cm, with few to many opposite branches, branches with many pedunculate dichasial cymes. Flowers small, 6-10 mm across, bisexual, actinomorphic, hypogynous, bracteate, fragrant. Calyx campanulate; tube 2.5-3 mm long, with white stellate hairs; limb 5-7-lobed; much inflated in fruits to 2.5 cm, brittle and dry. Corolla salverform, white; tube 2-3 mm long, cylindrical, outside glandular pubescent; limb 5-7-lobed, lobes subequal, 2.5-3 mm x 2.5-3 mm, obtuse, straight or reflexed. Stamens 5-6(-7), exserted, equal, inserted on corolla tube; filaments ca. 5 mm long; anthers bithecous, 1 mm long, dehiscing longitudinally. Carpels 2, syncarpous; ovary 4-locular, with 1 ovule per loculus, ovary apically hairy; style 3-4 mm long, stellate hairy; stigma ca. 1 mm long, bifid. Fruit drupaceous, globose, 1.2-1.8 mm diameter, obscurely 4-lobed at apex, 4-celled, endocarp bony, surrounded by thick spongy covering, minutely pubescent, completely enclosed within inflated calyx.
